Project Overview

The Safe Streets for All Action Plan – also known as SS4A – was funded by U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program. SS4A’s goal is to apply a Safe System approach to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes over time in the jurisdictions that receive Planning and Demonstration and Implementation grants. These principles are: deaths and serious injuries are unacceptable, humans make mistakes, humans are vulnerable, responsibility is shared, safety is proactive, and redundancy is crucial.

Huerfano County was awarded a Planning and Demonstration SS4A grant in Fiscal Year 2023 to develop this plan, to improve safety for all people regardless of how they get around. This plan will focus on transportation safety in and around different municipalities and throughout rural areas of the County (hereafter, the “study area”). The only road corridor not included in the plan is I-25.

Safety across this network is impacted by multiple overlapping topics including demographics, land use, and transportation. The SS4A approach considers each of these before providing safety recommendations.
