On October 13, 2026; the Huerfano County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted to lift Stage One Fire Restrictions. This followed decisions by Pueblo & Custer Counties and the USFS-Pike-San Isabel National Forest to lift Stage One Fire Restrictions due to seasonal weather and increased moisture and was recommended by the chiefs of Upper Huerfano Fire Protection District, Huerfano County Fire Protection District, and La Veta Fire Protection District as well as Huerfano County Emergency Management.
Huerfano County Emergency Management encourages responsible fire use, and reminds the public to follow the County’s Burn Permit process.
Earlier this year, on March 31st, 2026; by order of the BOCC, Huerfano County moved into Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. On June 30, 2026, by order of the BOCC, Huerfano County moved into Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. On August 25, 2026, the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions were lowered back to Stage One.
As of October 13, 2026; Huerfano County is no longer in Fire Restrictions.
