On November 18, the Board of County Commissioners passed the first reading of Ordinance 2025-03, which would prohibit the introduction, support, or establishment of non-native animal species—particularly gray wolves—within Huerfano County. The proposed ordinance is intended to protect local property, livestock operations, wildlife populations, and public safety.
If adopted, the ordinance would make it unlawful for any individual or entity to release, transport, encourage migration, or create habitat for non-native species in the county. It would also establish liability for damages resulting from such introductions and authorize the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office to assist with enforcement.
The ordinance will return for a second reading and public hearing on Monday, December 9, where the Board will consider its final adoption. Residents are encouraged to review the full text and participate in the upcoming meeting.
