The Board of County Commissioners appoints community members to a variety of Boards and Commissions that support the management and operations of the County. These boards or commissions provide input to the County’s decision-making process in many areas of expertise and have a substantial impact on day to day life in the County. Information regarding each of our boards and commissions can be found below.

Board of Adjustment
Hears appeals related to zoning matters and considers variances from the County Land Use Code
Board of Review
Hears appeals related to building matters and advises on the adoption of new Building Codes
Gardner Main Street Board
Advises on issues and projects in the Community of Gardner
Huerfano County Building Authority
Sets standards for and hears complaints against contractors and oversees building matters
Huerfano County Tourism Board
Markets Huerfano County as a destination using funds received from lodging taxes
Noxious Weed Advisory Board
Develops a recommended management plan and criteria for noxious weeds
Planning Commission
Adopts the master plan for the Unincorporated Areas of the County and advises on zoning matters
Raymond Aguirre Community Center Advisory Board
Advises on improvements and management of the RACC
Spanish Peaks Airport Management Committee
Advises on maintence and improvements at the Spanish Peaks Airport
Districts and Outside Organizations
The Board of County Commissioners appoints residents to a number of Boards for independent districts and organizations that provide services in or to Huerfano County. In some cases the Commissioners appoint the entire board and in others only a limited number of members.
The Southern Colorado RETAC Advisory Board is made up of a group of county commissioner-appointed individuals who volunteer their time to support the EMS and Trauma System. Each of the individuals deserves recognition in their ongoing dedication and commitment in improving EMS and Trauma Care for the sick and injured citizens within the Southern Colorado RETAC regions. Huerfano County appointees are:

The La Veta Cemetery District is a three person board that manages the La Veta Cemetery. Current members of the LVCD Board of Directors are:

The Spanish Peaks Library District provides library services to residents within the Huerfano RE-1 School District. The Board of County Commissioners appoints the entire Library District Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the current Board. Current members of the SPLD Board of Trustees are:

The Federal Mineral Lease District works to alleviate social, economic, and public finance impacts from development of natural resources on federal lands within this county. The District will distribute monies it receives from federal mineral leasing activities to subdivisions of the State of Colorado which represent communities impacted by the development of natural resources for use in (1) planning, (2) construction and maintenance of public facilities, and (3) provision of public services. The Board of County Commissioners appoints the entire District Board. Current FMLD Board members are:

The Southern Colorado Economic Development District is a non-profit organization whose membership is the thirteen counties of Southeastern Colorado. Founded in 1967, their primary focus is to provide economic development planning and technical assistance to our thirteen member counties. Huerfano County appoints 2 members to the SCEDD Board. The current Huerfano County representatives are:

The Las Animas and Huerfano Counties Board of Health members are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to make policies and decisions that will help promote health and prevent disease in the county. The board encourages public input into its decision-making process and welcomes community participation at its regular hearings. Huerfano County appoints two members of the Board and Las Animas County appoints three. The current Huerfano County members are:
